The Light Across the Hall
After my divorce, the woman across the hall became the first person who noticed when I stopped pretending that I was fine.
About Evan Cole
Stories about ordinary people finding the courage to begin again.
The first thing I learned about living alone was that silence has weight.
After my divorce, I moved into a third-floor apartment with one chair, two boxes of books, and a coffee machine my brother insisted I would need. At thirty-nine, I had become the kind of man who ate dinner over the sink because setting the table for one felt theatrical.
The woman across the hall noticed before anyone else.
Her name was Mara. She was forty-two, worked evening shifts at a veterinary clinic, and kept a green ceramic bowl outside her door for keys she was always losing.
Our first conversation happened because a delivery driver left her groceries at my door.
"You can keep the oranges,"
she said when I carried the bags across the hall.
"That seems like a generous reward for not stealing your dinner."
"I bought too many. Oranges are sold for families and optimistic people."
I smiled for what felt like the first time that week.
We became neighbors in small installments.
She borrowed my screwdriver. I watered her herbs when she visited her mother. She knocked one Sunday morning to tell me my car lights were on. When the building boiler failed in January, we sat in coats on the landing and shared coffee while the superintendent argued with a pipe downstairs.
Mara never asked why my marriage ended. That made it easier to tell her.
"We became polite strangers,"
I said.
"That sounds lonelier than fighting."
"It was."
