The Spare Key
At twenty-six, I moved in with June to survive graduate school. I did not expect our tiny kitchen to become the safest place I had ever told the truth.
About Rhea Morgan
Writing about late discoveries and the people who make honesty feel safe.
I met June because neither of us could afford graduate school housing alone.
I was twenty-six and beginning a master's program in urban planning. She was twenty-eight, finishing a degree in environmental law, and had already rejected three potential roommates for using the phrase "good vibes only" in their messages.
We signed a lease on a narrow two-bedroom apartment above a bakery. The floors leaned toward the kitchen, the radiators complained all winter, and every morning the hallway smelled like bread.
For the first six months, June was simply the easiest person I had ever lived with.
She replaced the toilet paper roll. She wore headphones during late study sessions. She knew that when I said I was fine after speaking to my mother, I usually needed tea and ten minutes before I could tell the truth.
I knew she was gay. She knew I had only dated men.
Neither fact seemed important until it did.
The change began during finals week.
I came home after midnight to find June asleep at the kitchen table, cheek resting beside a stack of case notes. A mug had gone cold near her hand.
I draped a blanket over her shoulders. She woke and looked up at me with the soft, unguarded expression people have before they remember themselves.
"You are home,"
she said.
"That is generally where roommates return."
"I saved you soup."
Something in my chest shifted. Not because of the soup. Because she had thought of me at the end of her own impossible day.
I spent the next month trying to label the feeling as gratitude.
Then June went on a date.
I helped her choose earrings and pretended the ache beneath my ribs was concern that the stranger might not appreciate her. When she came home early, I was reading on the sofa without absorbing a word.
"How was it?"
