Opposing Counsel
Five years of rivalry at the law firm. One case that required them to work together. One night that changed everything.
About Olivia Chen
The best battles end in bed.
I hated Olivia Chen with every fiber of my being.
Okay, maybe hate was a strong word. But she was my direct competitor at the law firm, we'd started the same year, made partner track the same year, and now we were both up for the same senior partner position. There was only one spot. And I would be damned if I let her take it.
She was infuriating. Brilliant, yes, annoyingly brilliant, with a photographic memory and the kind of courtroom presence that made juries fall in love with her. But she was also smug, competitive, and possessed an ability to get under my skin that no one else had ever achieved.
"Nice closing argument, Morgan. Very... adequate."
That was her favorite word. Adequate. Like anything I did was merely satisfactory, while she was somehow operating on a higher plane.
"Coming from the woman who used 'heretofore' three times in one paragraph, I'll take adequate as a compliment."
"It's proper legal language."
"It's pretentious, and the judge noticed."
Her eyes flashed, that dangerous spark that meant I'd landed a hit. Good. She needed to be taken down a peg. Or ten.
"May the best lawyer win, Morgan."
"I intend to."

The Case That Changed Everything
Three weeks later, we were assigned to the same case. Pro bono, a nonprofit fighting a corporate giant over environmental violations. The senior partners wanted to see how we worked under pressure. Together.
"This is a nightmare," I muttered to my paralegal.
"Actually, I heard Chen requested you specifically."
"What? Why?"
"No idea. But Henderson approved it. You two are stuck together until the trial's over."
I found Olivia in the conference room, already surrounded by boxes of documents, her hair twisted up in a messy bun, reading glasses perched on her nose. She looked... different. Softer, somehow. Less polished.
"Before you say anything, this wasn't my idea of a good time either. But I've reviewed the case files, and we need both our strengths to win this."
<
"Corporate law, environmental regulations, cross-examination."
"And mine?"
"Jury appeal, emotional persuasion, and..." She paused, as if the next words were physically painful. "Closing arguments. You're better at closing arguments."
I stared at her. In five years, that was the first compliment she'd ever given me.
"Was that so hard?"
"Excruciating. Can we focus on the case now?"
* * *
Working with Olivia was nothing like I expected. Away from the competitive pressure of partner track, she was focused, efficient, and surprisingly collaborative. She listened to my ideas instead of dismissing them. She built on my arguments instead of tearing them down.
And she was funny. That was the most annoying discovery of all.
"If I have to read one more internal memo about 'acceptable contamination levels,' I'm going to lose my mind."
We were in my office at 11 PM, surviving on coffee and Thai food, surrounded by evidence binders.
