Behind the Lens
A modeling gig turns into something far more intimate when the photographer sees beyond the surface.
About Delilah Chen
Every image tells a story.
The modeling gig was supposed to be simple, some up-and-coming photographer needed shots for her portfolio, and my agent said the pay was decent and the photographer "wasn't a creep," which was apparently high praise in this industry.
What my agent didn't mention was that the photographer was devastatingly beautiful and that the shoot would involve water and not much else.

The studio was a converted loft in Tribeca, all exposed brick and floor-to-ceiling windows. A shallow pool had been set up in the center, surrounded by lights and reflectors that I didn't understand but that looked very professional.
The photographer was already there when I arrived, tall and lean, with dark curly hair pulled back in a messy bun and paint-stained jeans that suggested she did more than just photography. Her name was Delilah, and she had the kind of face that made you forget what you were saying mid-sentence.
"You must be Reese. Your agent sent over your portfolio, you're exactly what I was looking for."
"What exactly are you looking for?"
"Vulnerability. Most models know how to be beautiful, but they've forgotten how to be real. You have something honest in your eyes." She gestured to the pool. "The concept is rebirth. Water as transformation. I want to capture the moment between who you were and who you're becoming."
"That's... deep."
"I'm an artist. Deep is what I do." She smiled, and it transformed her serious face into something warm and approachable. "There's a robe in the changing room. We'll start clothed and see where the story takes us."

The first hour was standard, poses in and around the pool, water dripping from my hair, Delilah directing me with quiet confidence. She moved around me like a dancer, finding angles I hadn't known existed, capturing moments I hadn't known I was having.
"You're holding back."
"What?"
"Your body is here but your mind is somewhere else. I need you present. Vulnerable. What are you afraid of?"
Nobody had ever asked me that before.
"Being seen, I guess. Really seen."
"That's exactly what I need." She lowered her camera and stepped closer to the pool's edge. "Let me show you something."
She pulled out her phone and scrolled through some images, self-portraits, raw and unflinching. Her own vulnerability laid bare in black and white.
"I was terrified to share these. But art isn't about comfort. It's about truth."
Something shifted in me. Trust, maybe. Or recognition.
"What do you need me to do?"
"Let go of the pose. Stop thinking about what you look like. Feel the water. Feel your body. Let me capture the real you."
I closed my eyes and let the water support me, floating weightless, forgetting the camera, forgetting everything except the sensation of being suspended between two worlds.
The shutter clicked again and again.
"Beautiful. That's exactly what I needed."
I opened my eyes to find her watching me with an intensity that had nothing to do with photography.
"Is there more you need?"
"The next part is nude. If you're comfortable."
I should have hesitated. Should have asked questions, negotiated boundaries. But something about this woman made me feel safe in ways I couldn't explain.
"I'm comfortable."
