Learning Myself
She bought her first vibrator at twenty-eight. What followed was a journey of self-discovery that changed everything.
About Lena Hart
The first step is learning yourself.
I bought my first vibrator at twenty-eight years old.
That probably sounds late. It was late. But I'd grown up in a house where sex wasn't discussed, where my body was something to be managed rather than enjoyed, where pleasure was a concept that applied to other people, braver people, freer people. Not me.
The woman at the store was patient. Asked what I was looking for, didn't make me feel stupid for not knowing. Handed me something pink and unintimidating and told me to start slow.
"You're learning yourself," she said. "There's no wrong way to do it."

I'd always known I was attracted to women. That wasn't the mystery. The mystery was why I couldn't seem to enjoy sex with them. Every girlfriend I'd had eventually gave up trying to make me come, and I'd fake it convincingly enough that they didn't suspect, or if they did, they didn't say anything.
I thought I was broken. Incapable. One of those people who just didn't experience pleasure the way everyone else did.
It took a therapist and a lot of honest conversations to realize the problem wasn't my body. It was my relationship to it. Years of shame had built walls so thick that pleasure couldn't get through.
"You need to learn to be comfortable with yourself first," she said. "Alone. Without the pressure of a partner."
Hence the vibrator.

The First Attempt
I lit candles. Put on music. Created what I thought was a "sexy atmosphere" based on movies I'd seen. Then I lay on my bed with this pink plastic thing and felt... nothing.
Not nothing physically. It vibrated. I felt that. But emotionally, mentally, I was completely checked out. Watching myself fro
After twenty minutes, I gave up and cried.
This was going to be harder than I thought.

Two Weeks Later
My therapist suggested a different approach.
"Stop trying to orgasm. That's not the goal right now. The goal is to feel present in your body. To touch yourself without expectation. To notice sensations without judging them."
So I tried again. But this time, I didn't turn the vibrator on. I just... touched. Ran my hands over my skin like I was meeting myself for the first time. My arms, my stomach, my thighs. Places that weren't sexual but were mine.
It felt strange. Awkward. But also something else.
