The Black Envelope
Fifteen years of marriage and a mysterious invitation. What they found inside changed everything they thought they knew about love.
About Kate Morrison
Love grows when you let it.
The invitation came in a black envelope.
No return address. Just our names in elegant script and, inside, a card with an address, a date, and two words: "By invitation only."
My wife knew what it was before I did. She'd been dropping hints for months, articles about ethical non-monogamy left on my nightstand, conversations about fantasies she'd never shared before, a new lingerie drawer that kept getting more adventurous.
"It's a party."
"I figured that much."
"A specific kind of party." Kate set down her coffee and looked at me with an expression I'd learned to recognize over fifteen years of marriage. The one that said she wanted something but wasn't sure I'd be okay with it. "A swinger party. For couples. Women only."

We'd been together since college, met freshman year, married at twenty-five, built a life that was comfortable and safe and, if I was being honest, increasingly predictable. I loved Kate more than anything. Our sex life was good. But lately, I'd noticed her eyes wandering, and instead of jealousy, I felt... curious.
"How did you even get invited to something like this?"
"Remember Hannah from my book club? She and her wife have been going for years. She mentioned it, I asked questions, she put in a word for us." Kate bit her lip. "I should have talked to you first. I just... I wanted to see if it was even possible before I got your hopes up."
"My hopes?"
"You think I haven't noticed you checking out other women? The way you look at our waitress at that Italian place? The yoga instructor you can't stop talking about?" She smiled. "I'm not jealous, Eva. I'm intrigued."
"You've been thinking about this for a while."
"I've been thinking about it for years. I just didn

We talked about it for a week. Set ground rules. Researched the host. Read articles about swinger etiquette and what to expect and how to communicate during play.
And then, on a Saturday night in October, we put on our best lingerie under elegant dresses and drove to an address in a part of the city I didn't know existed.
The house was gorgeous, old money, high ceilings, the kind of place where senators' wives held charity luncheons. A woman in a red dress greeted us at the door, checked our names against a list, and led us into a foyer where champagne was flowing and beautiful women were everywhere.
"First time?"
A couple had approached us, two women in their forties, comfortable with each other and clearly comfortable with this environment.
"Is it that obvious?"
"Only to someone who remembers being new." The taller one extended her hand. "I'm Grace. This is my wife, Natalie. We're happy to show you around, answer questions, whatever you need."
They were kind. Showed us the different rooms, some for talking, some for watching, some for participating. Explained the color-coded bracelets that indicated what you were looking for. Introduced us to other couples who'd been coming for years.
