The Third Element
Three years together, solid as rock. Adding a third was supposed to be an experiment. It became a revelation.

About Rachel Torres
Exploring boundaries together.
It started as a joke.
Rachel and I had been together for three years, and we'd reached that comfortable stage where you can say anything to each other without filter. We were lying in bed after sex, good sex, the kind that left us both breathless, when she mentioned it.
"Maya from the gym was checking you out today."
"What? No she wasn't."
"She absolutely was. Almost walked into the leg press machine because she was staring at your ass."
"You're imagining things."
"I'm not. And honestly? I don't blame her. Your ass is spectacular."
I laughed, rolling onto my side to face her. Rachel was beautiful in that effortless way that made my heart skip even after three years, dark skin, natural hair she wore in goddess locs, the kind of smile that lit up entire rooms.
"Even if she was, which she wasn't, I'm not interested. I'm very happily taken."
"I know. But hypothetically... if you wanted to explore that, I wouldn't be opposed."
"Explore what, exactly?"
"Her. With us."
I stared at her. "Are you seriously suggesting a threesome?"
"I'm saying I wouldn't be opposed to discussing it. If you were interested. Which you clearly are, based on how red your face just got."
* * *
The conversation didn't end there. Over the next few weeks, we talked about it, really talked, the way you have to when you're considering opening your relationship, even temporarily. What we wanted, what we were afraid of, what boundaries mattered.
"I've never done this before. What if I mess it up?"
"How would you mess it up?"
"I don't know. What if I give her more attention than you? What if I'm jealous when you're with her? What if it changes us?"
"Then we stop. We communicate. We prioritize us." She took my hand. "Leila, the reason I even feel comfortable suggesting this is because I trust what we have. It's solid. One night with someone else isn't going to break us."
"And you're sure you want this? This isn't just for me?"
"Baby, have you seen Maya? I want this for both of us."
* * *
"So this isn't a prank?"
We were at a bar, the three of us, after Rachel had awkwardly asked if Maya wanted to get drinks sometime. Maya had shown up thinking it was just a friendly thing, until Rachel explained what we were actually proposing.
"Not a prank. A genuine invitation. But also completely understandable if you're not interested."
Maya took a long sip of her beer, studying us both.
"I've done this before. Once, in college. It was..." she paused, choosing her words, "...chaotic. The couple wasn't on the same page, and it got messy."
"We've talked about it extensively. Rules, boundaries, check-ins. We know what we want and what we're not okay with."
"Which is?"
"This is a one-time thing. We're not looking for a third. We both need to be present for everything, no one-on-one hookups. And if anyone feels uncomfortable at any point, we stop. No questions asked."
Maya nodded slowly. "And you're both attracted to me? This isn't just one of you doing it for the other?"
