Study Session
Failing calculus leads to the best tutoring sessions of her life, and a connection that goes far beyond academics.
About Imani Brooks
Intelligence is the ultimate aphrodisiac.
I was failing calculus. Not just struggling, actively, catastrophically failing. Three weeks into the semester and I had a 47%, which meant I was about to lose my scholarship, my spot on the volleyball team, and any hope of graduating on time.
That's how I ended up at the campus tutoring center, swallowing my pride and asking for help.
"I need a math tutor. Urgently."
The student worker behind the desk barely looked up from her phone. "Fill out the form. Someone will contact you within 48 hours."
"I don't have 48 hours. I have a midterm in four days."
She finally looked at me, unimpressed. "Everyone has a midterm in four days. Fill out the form."
"I can take her."
The voice came from behind me, low, confident, with a hint of amusement. I turned and felt my breath catch.
She was stunning. Tall and lean, with dark skin and natural hair pulled back in a puff. Wire-rimmed glasses perched on her nose, and she was wearing a sweater that somehow made academic look sexy. She had a stack of textbooks under one arm and a coffee cup in the other hand, and she was looking at me like I was a puzzle she wanted to solve.
"I'm Imani. Math major, senior year. I've got an opening tonight if you're desperate."
"I'm very desperate."
She smiled, a slow, knowing smile that did something funny to my stomach.
"Then I'll see you at 7. Library, third floor, study room 304. Don't be late."
She walked away before I could respond, and I stood there like an idiot, watching her go.
The student worker snorted. "Good luck. Imani's tough."
I had a feeling she wasn't just talking about the tutoring.

7:00 PM - Study Room 304
She was already there when I arrived, surrounded by textbooks and notebooks, her laptop open to what looked like complex equations. She'd changed into a casual t-shirt and jeans, but somehow she still looked like she belonged in a museum.
"You're on time. I'm impressed."
"You said not to be late."
"Most people ignore that. Sit."
I sat across from her and pulled out my disaster of a notebook. She took one look at it and winced.
"Okay. We have a lot of work to do." She pulled her chair around to sit beside me, close enough that I could smell her perfume, something warm and spicy. "Show me what you're struggling with."
"Everything?"
"Be specific."
I opened my textbook to the chapter on derivatives, and she leaned in to look. Her shoulder brushed mine, and I forgot how to read.
"Derivatives. Classic. Everyone struggles with these at first." She grabbed a piece of paper and started writing. "The key is understanding what a derivative actually represents. It's not just a formula, it's a rate of change. Think of it like this...
She explained it differently than my professor had. Better. Clearer. She used real-world examples that actually made sense, and she was patient when I asked dumb questions.
By 9 PM, I understood derivatives. Actually understood them.
"Holy shit. It actually makes sense."
"I know. I'm very good at what I do."
There was no arrogance in her voice, just confidence. She knew she was smart, and she wasn't going to pretend otherwise.
"Thank you. Seriously. I thought I was going to fail out."
"You still might if you don't practice. Same time tomorrow?"
"Yes. Please."
She started packing up her things, and I found myself not wanting her to leave.
"Can I buy you coffee? As a thank you?"
She paused, considering. "The café downstairs is still open."
"Is that a yes?"
"That's a maybe. Depends on whether you can explain the chain rule back to me."
I took a deep breath and recited what she'd taught me, stumbling only once. When I finished, she was smiling.
"Acceptable. Let's get that coffee."

Day 3
Our sessions fell into a rhythm. Study for two hours, coffee after. She'd quiz me on formulas while we waited in line, and I'd try to make her laugh with stories about my volleyball teammates.
It was working. Both the studying and... whatever else this was.
"You're getting better."
We were in our usual study room, and she was checking my practice problems. She'd taken off her glasses and was rubbing her eyes, and she looked tired in a way that made me want to take care of her.
